ABOUT

LOTS TO LOCALES

LOS ANGELES, CA
The proposed spatial framework brings together discrete units to enact a contemporary mode of collective living informed by Los Angeles’s residential history. Through tectonic transitions and circulatory pathways, Lots to Locales organizes movement, encourages congregation, and integrates individual units into a cohesive whole that extends beyond the multi-family complex into the surrounding neighborhood.

Central to this integration is a perforated aluminum screen encasing the units, informed by the legacy of Craftsman homes in northeast Los Angeles. This exterior structure updates the Craftsman ideal of durable, affordable, and energy-efficient housing through fire-resistant materials and an acknowledgment of diverse domestic realities. Its porosity improves livability by promoting ventilation, affording privacy, softening glare, and filtering diffused daylight.

In contrast to the single-family Craftsman home, the project’s silhouette promotes collectivity through strategic openings that draw residents toward a shared outdoor living room. Within the shell’s visual continuity are flexible residential spaces accommodating two to three occupants and varied cohabitation arrangements. While rooted in Site A, Lots to Locales remains adaptable: standardized modular aluminum panels enable efficient assembly and reconfiguration, making this balance of individuality and collectivity widely attainable.
