SANTA MONICA ARBORETEUM
SANTA MONICA, CA
This arboretum serves as an urban sanctuary, seamlessly integrating nature into the built environment through a system of modular planters elevated by colonnades. The site is excavated to create a distinct, immersive space, separating visitors from the surrounding dense cityscape and enhancing a sense of retreat.
The ground level forms a forest-like atmosphere, where a central clearing allows larger trees to extend across both levels, reinforcing the vertical connection of nature. The column grid supports a variety of plant life, with shaded exterior planting areas beneath the structure providing optimal conditions for low-light vegetation, while the rooftop accommodates fully open-air gardens that maximize sun exposure. The rooftop indoor propagation spaces with diffused light create controlled environments for more delicate plant species, allowing for a diverse range of ecological conditions. Elevated passageways offer visitors dynamic vantage points to engage with the arboretum from above, encouraging movement and exploration throughout the space. A central circulation core connects all levels, ensuring accessibility, while an integrated café provides a space for visitors to gather and engage with the landscape.
